Occupy wants what Occupy is: another reality – Ghassan Hage and I on the ABC’s Drum

The Occupy movement has proliferated around the world with an unprecedented speed.

Though the scope, the scale and the social and political complexity of the protests differ according to local conditions, the speed of its global spread indicates a relatively clear sense of shared purpose. But, paradoxically, according to many commentators, clarity of purpose is precisely what the Occupy movement lacks. While some, on the basis of posters held up by the protestors, have called them an anti-greed movement, others have critically highlighted the fact that it is not possible to know what they ‘want’ and what their ‘demands’ really are.
